Deforestation in Borneo – habitat lost to palm oil plantations
Valuable acres of rainforest in Borneo are lost every single day to plantations, many of which have come into being to meet the constantly growing demand for palm oil. Rainforest loss is devastating to our planet. The rainforests absorb the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and return oxygen which we need to breathe. Rainforests are often called “the lungs of the earth”, and that is a true description.
Rainforests are also home to thousands of plant and animal species, many of which have yet to be discovered. Some of our most useful medicines are derived from plants found in rainforests. Who can say what new medicines remain to be discovered? If we can manage to halt the destruction, we may get a chance to find out.
This brief video shows what is currently happening in Borneo.
