Biodiversity plays an important role in medical research and public health
We all have so much to learn about the importance of protecting biodiversity. It is not simply a noble ideal, something we would like to aspire to, but then decide it is too impractical. It turns out that there are extremely important medical advances to be gained by researching how nature protects certain animal and plants from disease. Diseases such as diabetes, kidney failure, osteoporosis and many others which are difficult and expensive to treat, could be eliminated. But time is not on our side. Many of the animals and plants which have natural protections from these diseases are under severe threat as a result of climate change. When these animals lose their habitat and food supplies, we will forever lose our chance to learn how we can replicate their natural protections in order to use the knowledge to treat humans with these diseases.
In this fascinating video a physician gives a number of amazing examples of what important medical discoveries can come from nature, if we take action to preserve the habitats of these animals.
