Ecosystems are affected by wars – orchids lose their habitat
News reports tell us that war is a threat to animals, and that the world is losing species as a result. The reports typically focus on the large mammals, because the public is most interested in them, and is most sympathetic to their cause.
The reports should explain that when the large mammals go extinct, it is because they have lost their habitat. They can no longer find food or safe places to rest and reproduce. However, the places where they lived were also home to countless other animals and plants, including orchids.
Loss of habitat is responsible for the extinction of countless species, many of which have never even been catalogued.
The human race would do well to employ other means of resolving conflicts, before there is nothing left to save.
